athens: more than the acropolis

about 40% of greece lives in athens. everyone knows of athens as the cradle of democracy, the center of western civilization for much of its formative years, but it is so much more.

old school greek smack down

mix in a bit of that byzantine/eastern orthodox flava

the absurd tourist trap that is the acropolis (i don't bash attractions often, but the acropolis is, in my opinion, totally spoiled by the HORDES of tourists crawling all over it and the constant construction, and this was the absolute lowest SEASON, by god, people must be falling off the edges in the summer)

new years in athens, a little rain an't gonna stop the party

the archaeological museum, neolithic > mycennian > archaic > classical > hellenic > roman, 10,000 years in a day (chronological order, well, roughly)

people

streets and scenes

word up to yo motha, up next is the greek mainland, olympia, delphi, meteoria

Oh, these are fantastic. I've never wanted to go anywhere as much as I want to go to Greece! Your pictures have made my imagination drool.

I saw some Greek pottery at the Dallas Museum of art... it was stunning. Something about how clear the images are and how well preserved these pieces were in particular was so exciting. They looked maybe fifty years old, not 2500 years old... Pieces of clay that have seen more of the world than any man ever will. I don't know. History is my favorite. ;) They were history-infused pots.

If x = awesome, you are x^2!

Damn, these are a lot better than my photos.

I loved watching the changing of the guard at the parliament buildings, not least of all for the amusingly poofy shoes.

Funny, isn't it, how the photographs of the old buildings and architecture strike so much more powerfully than the photographs of the bright, gaudy throng that is modern tourism?

Amazing photos as always!

I went to the Acropolis in May '06 and it wasn't very crowded at all! I guess I was just lucky. It is an amazing view from up there. Just a sea of urban sprawl.

I'm so jealous you get to travel so much! Keep up the good work so we can all live vicariously!
